PROJECT 2: FIRE STATION DESIGN

For project 2, we were to design a fire station. Everything that we've done in project 1, as well as some online assignments which are based on windows and glazing, sustainability, and accessible design, will be incorporated in to the fire station design.

The site given to us is located in Central Islip, on the corner of Eastview Dr and Lowell Ave. 

CONCEPTS

For my site I want to encourage public gathering. Therefore there will be plenty of grass and landscape as well as trees surrounding the firehouse. A vegetable garden will be placed on site not only for the first responders at the fire station but for the community. A retention pond will also be on site to treat and store storm water runoff. It is also there fore aesthetic purposes. There are existing trees that will be preserved as much as possible for aesthetic purposes, noise pollution, and to preserve the environment.

I want to focus on sustainability as much as possible. In doing so, the roof will be divided and sloped upwards towards the sun to allow for solar paneling on the sloped roofs. Therefore, the focal point for my design is the elevations. This image is a parti of what I intend to do with my building design.

EXTERIOR ELEVATIONS

The fire house is designed for the community. The goal of the fire house is to avoid looking like a boring building, therefore this fire house is designed to be different from the surrounding buildings, yet fit into the neighborhood. It is important for the firehouse to be welcoming to the community and to encourage public gathering. The firehouse will have plenty of tall windows so there can be a visual connection to the public as well as have plenty of natural sunlight. People will feel welcomed when they arrive because they can see whats inside the fire house.

INTERIOR

The interior of the fire house is designed so that the spaces are divided between public and private. The first floor is completely public, aside from the locker rooms. The first floor includes the apparatus room, the meeting room, the training room, commercial kitchen, the mechanical room, exercise room, public bathroom, and the lobby. The second floor is a mixture of public and private. On one side of the second floor will consist of offices, a conference room, file storage room, and bathrooms. On the other side of the second floor will be closed off for privacy. There will be dorms, bathrooms with shower, a day room, and a couple of lounges.

This is a close up of the office area. Accessible design is incorporated in to the design of the office layout. All the offices, with the exception of the dispatch office which is located on the first floor overlooking the apparatus, are located on the second floor.

This diagram shows where the public and private spaces are located in the fire house. First floor is public while the second floor is private.

This diagram illustrates the three different zones in the fire house. The three zones indicates the three levels of exposure to contaminants: Hot Zone (red) for high hazard, Transition Zone (yellow) for moderate hazard and Cold Zone (blue) for low hazard.

There are several rooms where there is an important visual connection to the outside through large windows. Each room highlighted shows which rooms have that important visual connection. The dispatch room however, has a visual connection to the front of the apparatus and inside the apparatus, overseeing which vehicles are being used.

The arrows in this diagram illustrates the path a first responder would take to get to the apparatus room.

Here we can see the circulation throughout the entire site. The blue arrows indicates public traffic. The dark or bold red arrows indicates the path an emergency vehicle would take responding to an emergency, leaving the apparatus. The light red arrows indicates the emergency vehicle returning to the apparatus. 

3D VIEWS

BUILDING MATERIAL

The exterior of the fire house is made up of different materials. The exterior of the apparatus is made up of brick. The apparatus garage doors are glass, to have that visual connection with the outside. The entrance of the fire house will be made up of stucco material while the rest of the building is made up of metal panel siding. The roof of the fire house will be made up of metal which will consist of solar panels.
